Tips
for a Healthy Lawn and Garden
- Don't
add anything to your lawn
or garden until you've had your soil's pH tested for acidity
and fertility. Haly Landscaping & Irrigation Inc. can
do this for you, or it can be done through your County Agricultural
Extension Service.
- Aerate
your soil
and remove dead organics by raking. This produces a stronger
lawn and reduces the need to use fertilizers or pesticides
- Mow
high and mow often
to reduce stress on grass, retain moisture, shade
out weeds, and keep soil cool. Mow without a bag and leave
clippings to fertilize
naturally and shade soil.
- Cultivate
and mulch your gardens to help retain moisture and keep
weed
growth down.
- Water
only when the soil is dry, but water thoroughly to encourage
deep root growth which reduces the need for excessive watering.
- Overseed
your fescue with a tall fescue blend. Thick turf is
the best way to prevent weeds, and different strains of
grass can prevent a single pest or disease from wiping out
your lawn
- Don't
over fertilize your lawn. Over fertilized grass roots
become lazy and remain near the surface where they require
more water and chemicals.
- Plant
trees.
They contribute oxygen, remove carbon dioxide, reduce erosion,
and give shade.
- Avoid
shearing plants. Shearing promotes water- demanding
new growth on plants, and creates a dense shell of outer
growth, giving insects and disease a better chance to take
hold. Instead, use hand shears or loppers to thin branches
to a side shoot or bud.
